Here's Everything You Need for Better Sleep (The Adult Edition)

June 9, 2021

Why is quality sleep important?

The idea that as you get older you don’t need much sleep is a myth. In fact, adults need 7.5-8 hours of sleep a night to operate at their best. To begin, we want to stress the importance of sleep and why you should prioritize getting quality sleep as part of a healthy mind and body.

How to build a solid bedtime routine

Do you have a bedtime routine? Because when it comes to getting adequate sleep, having a bedtime routine you love can make all the difference. Each person values different things and finds calm and relaxation from other things. That means your bedtime routine should be unique to you.

Set a good bedtime

Set a bedtime early enough to get at least 7 hours of sleep. Once you’re set on your bedtime, decide how long you’d like your routine to last. Some people may enjoy a long hour of winding down, while others are happy with a 15-minute routine. Remember, bedtime routines are personal and should be what works for you!

Find activities that help you relax, unwind, and prepare your mind and body for good sleep

While your routine should be individualized, we’d like to note the large body of research supporting some of these nighttime practices:

  • Meditation and mindfulness practices
  • Limit use of screens
  • Journaling
  • Take a hot shower or warm bath
  • Yoga or stretches
  • Prepare for the next day

Sample bedtime routine: Take a warm shower, change into PJ’s, do your skincare routine, guided meditation with Hatch Restore, sleep well!

Tips for staying asleep

Do you struggle to stay asleep at night? There’s a lot that can interfere with getting a quality 7 hours straight. There are whacky work schedules, crying newborns, stress, and tons more to blame for your middle-of-the-night wake-ups. Try to stay away from these things that commonly interfere with your sleep.

Pro tip: Be gentle with yourself. Building new healthy habits takes time and dedication. We are here to help you along the day to get the sleep you’ve always dreamed of!
